Podcast: Do you want it?

Being a Christian isn’t easy, or at least it’s not supposed to be.  It is good, but really grabbing a hold of new life in Christ requires that we do some things that are difficult too.  This sermon deals with that topic and ultimately asks the question, “do you want it?”

Monday Morning Sermon: The Worthy Life

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” Ephesians 4:1

We have a high calling as the Church of Jesus.  This is a calling we don’t take on alone, but with others who claim His name.  Therefore, the way we live out our calling together is very important.

In Our Neighborhood: Hands Automotive

Recently, Hands of the Carpenter, a ministry that uses the proceeds from their auto repair shop to help widows and single mothers pay for their auto repairs, purchased a garage at 15th and Kendall and moved into the neighborhood.  The shop is called “Hands Automotive.”  I had the pleasure of meeting with the President of Hands of the Carpenter, Dan Georgopulos at their shop.  They have a desire not only to help widows and single mothers but to be involved in our community as a redemptive force for Jesus Christ.

If you need any work done on your car take it over to Hands Automotive.

If you’d like to give to this ministry you can do that here.

Monday Morning Sermon: Blessed to Bless

When God chose Abram and told him he would bless him, part of the purpose was so that all people on earth would be blessed through him and his descendants.  For the Church the same is true.  We have received blessings as a people brought together through Jesus and we are meant to pass that blessing on to others.

Monday Morning Sermon: A Future with God

Choosing to walk with God into the future is different than trying to determine the future on our own.  God asks us to trust him and be willing to risk things we otherwise wouldn’t.  This sermon explores five things about a future with God.

In Our Neighborhood: 40 West Arts District

There is an Arts District in the works on Lamar Street from Colfax down to 13th St.  It’s exciting to have a focus on the arts coming to our neighborhood.  Here’s a description from their brochure.

Anchored by historic West Colfax (US 40), Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, and the new Lamar Street Light Rail Station, this emerging, community oriented, non-profit arts district in northeast Lakewood embraces the Arts–Arts of all kind–from fine arts tocdigital media, cool jazz to string quartets, square dance to traditional crafts–and everything in between. Supported by individuals, businesses, and civic organizations, 40 West’s singular goal is to support the arts, artists, and artisans by creating community arts spaces and community arts events in order to bring the joy and energy of creativity to our community. With a balanced approach of supporting both established and emerging artists as well as encouraging hands-on experimentation with the arts for the self-proclaimed non-artists, 40 West exists to enrich the community and support the cultural and economic vitality of the region.

Look for more updates here as the project moves along.  For now you can also check out their website or the full brochure online.

Monday Morning Sermon

Man looking at old picturesThere are many resources available to help us live a life of faith as disciples of Jesus.  We often focus on the Bible, prayer, and community, which are all very important.  One resource we have that isn’t acknowledged as often is our individual and collective memory.  This sermon explores the power of memory and a couple specific applications–strength in difficult times and keeping us on the path of righteousness.

In Our Neighborhood: The Table

It’s always exciting to hear about ways God is working in NE Lakewood and Edgewater.  Yesterday I met with Tim Ahlman, one of the pastors at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (20th and Wadsworth).  Over the past couple years he has worked with Mean Street Ministries to begin “The Table.”  This is a holistic ministry that includes a wide range of people.  Of the 150 to 170 people there each Thursday evening about half are long time participants and members of Bethlehem Lutheran and the other half are the working poor and homeless from local areas.

I came away from our meeting yesterday feeling incredibly encouraged at what God is doing for a few reasons.

  • Because of Tim.  He is passionate about the gospel and seeing people reconciled to God.  He is also passionate about listening to people, meeting their needs (physical, spiritual, emotional), and seeing what the Holy Spirit does in the context of shared meals, shared worship, and shared lives.  Tim is the real deal!
  • Because it’s w0rking.  One of the things we hope for at Mountair is to continue to see God bring together people from a variety of backgrounds, break down the barriers between us, and form us into a new family with Christ as our head.  That’s happening in our church already, but I hope it continues to grow.  It’s happening and it’s growing at The Table and that’s a huge encouragement.
  • Because it’s developing in God’s way.  I got the impression from Tim that they set out to love the poor and act like Jesus–there was no big strategic plan.  They’re responding faithfully to what God is doing and The Table is developing at God’s pace and in His way.  That’s a great reminder for us as we keep pursuing God’s way for Mountair.

If you ever want to check out The Table you can go to the website, or go to Bethlehem when they meet.

It’s every Thursday, dinner at 6:00 and worship at 7:00.  Let me know if you want to go and we can check it out together!

Our New Website

Welcome to the new, improved, updated, magnificent, Mountair Christian Church website. To be honest, the old one was giving us some problems so we trashed it and made a new one. There are a few pluses to the new setup.
1. We have a blog that will keep you updated on what’s going on around here and provide some resources and thoughts to help you grow in your faith.
2. It’s easy to update. That’s more of a plus for us, but it will be good for you too because you won’t have to look at old content until your eyes are numb.
3. Since it’s easier to change things you’ll get new visuals too!
Let us know what you think and we’ll keep making improvements.
